Indonesia has ethnic and cultural diversity, one of which is the Kasada ceremony. However, there are still many who do not know where the kasada ceremony came from.
Kasada ceremony originates from East Java. This ceremony is one of the traditional ceremonies of the Tengger tribe which is still sustainable today. There are 5 tribes that inhabit the province of East Java. The five are Javanese, Madurese, Tengger, Osing, and Bawean tribes.
The Tengger tribe is a community of people who inhabit the area at the foot of Mount Bromo, Probolinggo Regency. Quoted from the book Values of Local Wisdom and Its Implementation in Elementary Education by Karimatus Saidah et al, the average Tengger tribe adheres to Hinduism.
The Hindu religion embraced by the Tenggerese has been acculturated with the original Tenggerese culture. For example, in the use of the greeting sentence “hong ulun basuki langgeng” which means God continues to give us eternal salvation.
The Tengger tribe is famous for its cultural diversity and ceremonial rituals. One that is popular among the wider community is the Kasada ceremony or Yadnya Kasada.
Kasada ceremony is a ritual performed as a form of expression of gratitude and hope to be kept away from disaster. This ceremony is carried out by throwing the produce into the crater of Mount Bromo. In its development, this ceremony became one of the Tengger Hindu holidays.
Kasada Ceremony Procession Originating from East Java
There are several stages in the implementation of the Kasada ceremony. Starting from taking holy water to salvation. Here are the steps:
1. Before the Kasada ceremony is held, the Tenggerese will take holy water on Mount Widodaren to perform the nglukat ritual of the people, a soul purification ceremony carried out in Poten.
2. Opening ceremony. The ceremony was opened by the committee and attended by all elements of society and the government. Including traditional shamans from all villages in the Tengger region. The event opened with a dance performance of Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger. The traditional shaman will lead the ceremony participants who have brought various crops to be thrown into the crater of Mount Bromo.
3. The Kasada ritual ceremony is performed at Poten, a temple located at the foot of Mount Bromo. The series includes preparation for the ceremony, reading religious songs accompanied by gamelan, purifying the place of worship, reading the Vedic scriptures, reading the history of Kasada and the marriage of Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger who are the forerunners of the Tengger tribe.
4. Angry the second ummah. This event is done by distributing bija which is affixed to the face. Giving fragrances or flowers on the right, burning incense in the furnace, and sprinkling water on the heads and faces of the people.
5. Muspa or prayer led by Pinandhita and assisted by leaders.
6. Recitation of mantras after prayer. This mantra consists of five mantras containing praises to God and requests for a peaceful life.
7. Selection of candidates for traditional traditional healers who replace the previous traditional healers.
8. Lelabuhan offerings in the crater of Mount Bromo. Lelabuhan is the main event of the Kasada ceremony. This event started by walking from Poten to the crater of Mount Bromo by bringing offerings. The offerings usually contain crops and livestock. This journey is accompanied by prayer readings according to their respective intentions.
9. Slametan or salvation is the end of the Kasada ritual. Slametan is carried out in each village led by their respective traditional shamans.
Kasada ceremony is an attraction for tourists visiting Bromo. This ceremony is one of the best cultural events in the country.
“Indonesia has many cultural events. One of the best is Yadnya Kasada. This event is wrapped in the very exotic nature of Bromo. This combination is a very interesting dish for tourists, including foreign tourists,” said the Special Staff of the Minister of Tourism for Media and Communication, Don Kardono.
